Set in Melbourne in October 1928, Miss Phryne Fisher is asked to investigate certain events at Farrell´s Circus, as some animals have been poisoned, ropes sabotaged and it seems the circus has been cursed. Then a member of the circus is found murdered in an impeccable boarding house. Phryne needs to go undercover, leave her comfort zone, face some fears and test her physical skills and emotional strength in order to solve all the mysteries and find the saboteur and the assassin. Some of the topics explored in this novel include identity issues and being in-between worlds, third gender issues, social organization and social outcasts in the parallel world of the circus, drug gangs and rape.
