Overkill (2007) was Vanda Symon’s first fiction novel, which features Sam Shephard, a young sole-charge female police constable in Mataura as the main character. Penguin New Zealand decided they wanted a series of crime fiction novels about Sam Shephard in a new series of crime novels set in New Zealand and so The Ringmaster was published in 2008, Containment in 2009, and Bound in 2011.

In Overkill a young mother in the town is brutally murdered in what seems a professional job, with Sam at the heart of the police hunt to find the killer. But when Sam’s past relationship with the dead woman’s husband is revealed, Sam is stood down from the case and the urned int prime murder suspect. Frustrated, Sam can’t stop herself making murder inquiries and gets into serious trouble with her police superiors, until she discovers that the murdered woman was working as a journalist, had uncovered a local scandal, and was been killed to keep her quiet. When Sam enters this world she’s in real physical danger, until at last a conspiracy is uncovered and the killer revealed. Disillusioned, Sam prepares to leave town.
