Paul Cleave’s Work October 10, 2016 – Posted in: Book

Christchurch New Zealand, where Paul Cleave’s detective novels are set, is reputed to be the “whitest” city in the country. However that maybe, Christchurch does have a multiracial, multicultural community. It is this c community which is never reflected in Cleave’s work. Certainly he sets out to forefront the darker side of the city’s society, but he does so as if using Christchurch as a metaphor for any large metropolis. By doing so, the author, wittingly or unwittingly, actually reinforces the white hegemony in the city and structures his social view exclusively from a neocolonialist, white, patriarchal point of view.
