Ian Moffitt (1926-2000) was an Australian author best known for the title The Retreat of Radiance (1982), a best-selling novel based on his experience as a correspondent in the Chinese Civil War (1949). He headed News Limited bureau in New York in the early 1960s and was a feature writer for The Australian newspaper in the late 1960s and 1970s before becoming a full-time novelist in 1981. Moffitt was born in Sydney on 31 July 1926, and grew up in Taree on the north coast of New South Wales. He wrote and worked for several Australian newspapers and magazines during his journalistic and editorial career such as The Daily Mirror (Australia), The Sydney Morning Herald, The Australian and The Bulletin.
