Peter Temple was born in South Africa in 1946. In 1980 he moved to Australia and now lives in Ballarat, Victoria. He has won five Ned Kelly awards – the annual prize for best Australian crime fiction – and in 2010 he won Australia’s most prestigious literary prize, the Miles Franklin Award for his crime novel Truth. Four of his crime novels are about Jack Irish, a not particularly successful lawyer turned private detective whose hobbies include joinery and gambling on the horses. Two of the Jack Irish novels, which are largely set in Melbourne, have been produced as feature films.
