Tom Rob Smith (London, 1979) was born of a Swedish mother and an English father. He was educated at St John’s College, Cambridge and continued his Creative Writing studies at Parvin University, Italy. His first novel, Child 44 (2008), was inspired in the case of Andrei Chikatilo and was awarded the 2008 Ian Fleming Steel Dagger for best thriller of the year by the Crime Writers’ Association, named on the long list for the 2008 Man Booker Prize, and nominated for the 2008 Costa First Novel Award. This was followed by two other awards in 2009. It has been turned into a film directed by Daniel Espinosa (2015). Child 44 has been followed by two follow-ups, The Secret Speech (2009) and Agent 66 (2011), and a standalone novel, The Farm (2014).
