Vaadey Ratna lives in New York. Her first novel In the Shadow of the Banyan has been widely acclaimed and was selected as a finalist for both the 2013 PEN/Hemingway Award and the 2013 Indies Choice Book of the Year. It will be appearing in multiple translations over the coming year. Ratna was five years old when the Khmer Rouge came to power in Cambodia. Born into the Cambodian Royal Family she was sent together with her sibling and other family to a slave camp to be “Re-educated” in the country. She lost most of her family during the Khmer Rouge regime and finally made it to the United States with her mother as refugees in 1981. At that time she had no English at all
